Materials guide
At BAYU, we use high-quality materials. Our materials guide highlights our most commonly used materials so you know exactly what you're getting!
DQ metal
The abbreviation DQ stands for Designer Quality. The name DQ was created to emphasize the high European quality. DQ metal is also nickel-free, meaning many people can wear it without it tarnishing or experiencing allergic reactions. The platings of this metal are made of real gold and silver. While this naturally results in a price difference, the lifespan of products with these platings is much longer.
DQ metal retains its beauty for a very long time thanks to its real gold and silver plating. However, this varies from person to person. DQ metal can react to skin acidity. To keep the metal looking beautiful even longer, we recommend avoiding contact with water, body lotion, hand sanitizer, and perfume.
Miyuki
Miyuki is the brand name for the highest quality seed beads. Seed beads are also called embroidery beads or seed beads. These are very small beads used for weaving, stringing, or embroidery. The advantage of Miyuki is its excellent quality. All beads of the same size are identical, unlike other seed bead brands, where the beads vary in size and thickness. Especially with special stringing patterns, the result is much more beautiful with uniform beads than with beads of varying sizes.
Miyuki generally stays beautiful and doesn't fade easily. However, this varies greatly from person to person. This depends on the pH of the skin, which varies from person to person. Looking to make a bracelet or necklace that doesn't fade easily? Then be sure to look for colors with Duracoat, Ceylon, Opaque, Crystal, or Fancy Lined in the name; these will last the longest. We do recommend keeping water, body lotion, hand sanitizer, and perfume in mind.
Stainless steel
Stainless steel, also known as rustproof steel, is currently trending in jewelry. This is because it's easy to maintain. Stainless steel primarily contains iron, nickel, chromium, and carbon. Stainless steel has many advantages. It's 100% allergy-free and 100% recyclable. Compared to silver, stainless steel is a strong metal, shinier, and smoother.
From a metal-technical perspective, stainless steel isn't a good term. Stainless steel can rust. It's wise not to swim or shower with your jewelry on because of the chlorides in the water. This can damage the chrome plating. Also be mindful of chemical products like perfume and sunscreen. If you remove your jewelry, you'll enjoy it much longer and it won't discolor.
Natural materials
On our website, we sell various natural products, including shells and gemstones. Unless otherwise indicated, all natural products listed on our website are genuine, 100% gemstone or 100% shell. Each natural product has its own unique properties. For example, rose quartz is the gemstone of love, and the abalone shell brings happiness, joy, and creativity. Because they are genuine natural products, each product is unique and may sometimes vary slightly from the photo in shape and color.
Genuine gemstones are natural products and therefore certainly not invulnerable. We recommend removing gemstone jewelry when exercising, gardening, doing housework, and sleeping. After wearing for a while, gemstones in jewelry can become dull. This can be caused by factors such as skin oil. Try cleaning the stone by wiping it with a damp cloth. Some shells are made of thin, fragile material. Handle them with care, and they can last a very long time.
Silver
Any product where we use the term silver without additives (e.g., DQ silver or plated silver) is 925 sterling silver. 925 sterling silver is made of 92.5% silver and 7.5% of another metal, usually copper. The second metal is necessary because pure silver alone is too soft and pliable. Jewelry made solely of pure silver is prone to scratches and breaks easily. The copper in 925 sterling silver provides strength and makes the jewelry resistant to damage. Sterling silver is therefore a high-quality material.
Silver can react with sulfur. This causes a black layer to form on the silver. This is called silver sulfide. Sulfur or forms of it are present in the air and in or on your skin. If you don't like this effect on your silver jewelry, you can polish the product or soak it in a silver bath. Your silver jewelry will then look as good as new!
Gold-plated
Gold-plated means that a product made of another metal is dipped in liquid gold. Therefore, the product is not entirely made of gold. This is also called gold-plated or gold-filled. The base material of the gold-plated jewelry we sell is 925 sterling silver.
Gold-plated products can discolor through contact with water, body lotion, hand sanitizer, perfume, and other liquids. The liquid causes friction and wears away the gold layer. To ensure your gold-plated jewelry retains its color, we recommend using these liquids with caution. Many jewelers also offer re-plating!
